Travel insurance covers a genuinely wide range of situations, from medical emergencies and trip cancellations through to lost luggage, though the specific inclusions and exclusions vary considerably between different policies and providers, which makes reading the fine print genuinely worthwhile well before you actually set off travelling.

Checking whether a policy covers the specific activities planned for a trip, such as adventure sports or scuba diving, matters considerably since many standard policies quietly exclude higher-risk activities unless a specific add-on has actually been purchased separately well in advance of the actual departure date.

Understanding any pre-existing medical conditions clause is particularly important, since undisclosed conditions can genuinely void a claim entirely, even one entirely unrelated to the condition itself, depending entirely on the policy's own specific wording and its printed terms. Reading the policy document properly before departure avoids nasty surprises later.

Keeping a copy of the policy and an emergency assistance phone number genuinely accessible while travelling, kept separate from where the rest of your documents are stored, ensures it can be found quickly if it is ever truly, genuinely and urgently needed. A folder with everything together makes a stressful moment far simpler.
