For sellers specifically, meeting in a well lit, genuinely public location, and waiting for a payment to actually clear properly before handing over an item, prevents the common trick involving a fake or later reversed payment confirmation simply shown quickly on a stranger's phone screen.
For buyers specifically, inspecting an item carefully in person before paying anything at all, and staying wary of sellers who refuse to meet in person or insist on an unusual payment method, reduces the risk of paying for something that ultimately never actually arrives at all.
Using a platform's own built-in messaging and payment system, rather than moving the conversation elsewhere at a stranger's sudden request, also keeps a genuinely useful, timestamped record available if any dispute ever needs to be properly and fairly resolved at a later, calmer date down the track.
