Safe Disposal of Financial Documents

Bank statements, expired cards, and documents containing account numbers or identification details should never simply go into general rubbish or recycling without first being properly destroyed, since they can genuinely be a valuable resource for anyone attempting identity theft while sorting through household waste bins.
A simple cross-cut shredder handles most everyday documents quite effectively, turning readable pages into pieces small enough that reconstructing the original information becomes genuinely impractical for someone rifling through the rubbish or recycling bin specifically looking specifically for exactly those kinds of personal, useful details.
For expired cards specifically, cutting directly through the chip and magnetic stripe, in addition to shredding or physically cutting the card into several separate pieces, ensures the card genuinely cannot be used even if it is somehow recovered fully intact by a stranger some time later.
Keeping a designated container specifically for documents awaiting shredding, rather than letting them accumulate loosely on a desk or kitchen bench, makes this particular habit considerably easier to maintain consistently over the much longer term without much ongoing, deliberate active effort or much thought at all.
