Festive decorations, including string lights and small ornaments, can present choking, electrical and fire hazards that are genuinely easy to overlook amid the general excitement and busyness of the holiday season around the house. A quick check before decorations go up each year is time well spent.

Checking that decorative lights are in good condition before use, avoiding overloaded power points, and keeping small, breakable or battery-containing decorations well out of reach of young children addresses much of this genuinely seasonal risk. Older, well loved decorations are often the ones most worth a second look.

Being mindful of certain festive plants that can be toxic if ingested by children or pets, and keeping any lit candles genuinely well supervised amid the general activity of a festive gathering, rounds out the main seasonal precautions. A quick search of common festive plants beforehand removes most of the guesswork.

Planning ahead for busier roads and travel during peak holiday periods, including extra time and rest breaks along the way, reduces the stress that can otherwise make holiday travel feel considerably more rushed than necessary. Leaving a little extra time in the schedule reduces pressure for everyone involved.
