A simple visual check before using any appliance, looking closely for a frayed cord, a cracked plug or an unusual burning smell during normal operation, catches many electrical hazards well before they have the chance to develop into something considerably more serious for the household as a whole.
Appliances that repeatedly trip a circuit breaker, or that feel unusually hot to the touch during entirely normal use, are quietly signalling a genuine fault worth investigating properly rather than something to simply work around by resetting the breaker again and again each time it happens.
Keeping appliances safely away from water at all times, even when fully switched off, and unplugging items such as heaters or clothes irons whenever they are not directly supervised, meaningfully reduces both the electrical risk and the fire risk considerably across the whole household over time.
Having older appliances checked periodically by a properly qualified electrician, particularly anything with a cord already showing visible signs of wear and tear, is a genuinely sensible habit rather than something to keep deferring until an obvious problem eventually and inconveniently appears on its own.
