Old files, forgotten accounts and unused apps accumulate over time, and each one represents a small piece of your overall digital footprint that could potentially be exposed if that particular service or device were ever genuinely compromised. Most people are surprised by how much has quietly accumulated over the years.

Setting aside time periodically to review and delete files, photos and documents no longer needed, particularly anything containing sensitive personal or financial information, reduces the scale of what could genuinely be exposed all at once. An hour spent on this occasionally is genuinely worthwhile time spent.

Uninstalling apps no longer in active use, and revoking any account permissions they were originally granted, closes access points that often continue quietly running in the background long after their original purpose has genuinely passed. Many of these permissions are granted once and simply never revisited.

Treating this as a regular, ongoing habit rather than a single major clean-up keeps your overall digital footprint considerably more manageable and genuinely easier to keep secure over the long term. A small recurring calendar reminder keeps this particular habit genuinely alive year after year.
