Safe Software Update Habits
Launch library · evergreen read

Software updates often include security patches addressing vulnerabilities that have already been identified, sometimes ones actively being exploited by attackers, which makes delaying updates a genuine, growing risk rather than a purely cosmetic inconvenience to deal with later. Delaying even a single update can leave a known gap wide open.
Enabling automatic updates where available, for operating systems, browsers and commonly used apps, removes the need to remember to check manually and closes security gaps considerably faster than manual updating typically ever allows for most users. Setting this up once means never having to think about it again.
Being cautious of update prompts that appear unexpectedly outside of an app or operating system's normal channel, since fake update notifications are sometimes used to distribute malware disguised as a genuinely legitimate patch. A genuine update rarely arrives as an urgent pop-up demanding immediate action.
Restarting devices periodically, since some updates only fully apply after a proper restart, ensures the protection an update actually provides is genuinely active rather than simply downloaded and quietly waiting in the background. A quick restart at the end of the day closes this gap easily.
