Generator Safety Basics for Home Use

Portable generators are a genuinely useful backup during extended power outages, but they carry real, serious risks if used incorrectly, particularly around carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless and can build up dangerously quickly in any enclosed or poorly ventilated household space overnight while everyone sleeps.

A generator should always run outdoors, well away from windows, doors and vents, never inside a garage even with the door left open, since carbon monoxide can still steadily accumulate and drift back into the home completely unnoticed by anyone inside at the time, day or night.

Letting a generator properly cool down before refuelling, and never refuelling while it is still running, avoids the genuine fire risk of spilled fuel contacting hot engine components during ordinary, everyday operation of the whole unit outdoors in the open, well ventilated yard space away from windows.

Connecting a generator directly to household wiring should only ever be done by a qualified electrician using the proper equipment, since an incorrect connection can create a serious hazard for utility workers as well as for the household itself further down the electrical line, well after the outage ends.
