Different types of fire extinguishers are genuinely designed for different kinds of fires, and using the wrong type, particularly water on an electrical or grease fire, can make an already dangerous situation considerably worse rather than actually better for anyone standing nearby at the time.
A general-purpose extinguisher suitable for common household fires, kept in an easily accessible spot such as the kitchen, covers most everyday risks reasonably well, though it is genuinely worth checking the specific rating printed clearly on the extinguisher itself well beforehand, not during a fire.
Learning the basic technique well in advance, aiming firmly at the base of the fire rather than at the flames themselves, and knowing when a fire is simply too large to fight and it is time to leave, matters considerably more than the extinguisher itself.
Checking the pressure gauge periodically, and having extinguishers properly serviced or replaced according to the manufacturer's clear guidance, ensures one is genuinely functional and properly ready if it is ever actually needed in a real, unfolding household emergency later on that same, otherwise ordinary day.
