Pets are genuinely easy to overlook in emergency planning, yet they need their own dedicated supplies, including food, water, any medications and a secure carrier, ready well in advance rather than gathered in a hurry when time is already genuinely short and quite stressful for everyone.
Ensuring a pet's microchip details and identification tags remain current, and keeping a recent, clear photo on hand at all times, makes reunion considerably more likely if a pet becomes separated from the household during a chaotic, genuinely stressful evacuation away from a familiar, comfortable home.
Researching pet-friendly accommodation or emergency shelters in your area well ahead of time avoids the genuinely difficult situation of needing to choose between leaving a pet behind and dangerously delaying an evacuation for the rest of the anxiously waiting family already gathered close by at a safe distance.
Practising getting a pet calmly into its carrier during ordinary, low-stress times makes the whole process considerably faster and noticeably less distressing for the animal if it ever genuinely needs to happen quickly during a real, unfolding emergency at some later, entirely unplanned date down the track.
