Preparing a property well ahead of bushfire season focuses mainly on reducing what can actually fuel a fire near the home, including clearing dry leaves and debris from gutters, removing dead vegetation close to the house, and keeping surrounding grass mowed reasonably short around the entire property.

Having a clear, written plan for whether your household genuinely intends to leave early or instead stay and actively defend the property, made calmly well in advance rather than decided in a panicked moment, is one of the most important preparations any household in a fire-prone area can realistically make.

Knowing the official fire danger ratings for your specific area, and properly understanding what each rating level actually means for your own concrete plan, helps translate a general public warning into a clear, concrete decision about exactly what to do on that particular, uncertain day.

Keeping an emergency kit, important documents and a full tank of fuel genuinely ready during high-risk periods means considerably less to organise quickly if conditions happen to change faster than anyone genuinely expected that particular, unusually hot, dry and windy autumn morning after weeks without rain.
